ABOUT PREVENTION

The Saunders-Matthey Coalition is proud to continue their support of Prevent Cancer Now. We are looking at an opportunity to help fund their new campaign to raise public awareness about the dangers of incinerating garbage and its links to cancer.

Good News For Prevention!
CAPEIn February 2008, SMCPC contacted the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment with an offer to fund one of their projects. Our coalition donated $20,000.00 to their campaign for the Ontario Ban of Pesticides. Our funds were used for ads in major papers urging citizens to contact the Premier in support of the ban. Also, a pro-ban petition was mailed to 6, 000 people. A quarter page ad was published in the Ontario Medical Review urging doctors to contact the Premier in support of the ban. In addition, they are planning a professional poll to Ontarians’ on the pesticide ban.

On Earth Day, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced that they would eventually ban cosmetic pesticide use in Ontario. Although thirty-two municipalities already have cosmetic pesticide bans in place, this legislation will force the remaining municipalities to comply as well. It should be noted that this ban is not all-inclusive, as golf courses, farmers and forestry sectors are exempt. If passed, the ban will come into effect next spring. Shortly after the Premier’s news conference, Home Depot announced that it would phase out the sale of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides by the end of 2008, and increase its selection of environmentally friendly alternatives.

Our congratulations to CAPE and to all organizations who campaigned for this legislation. Eliminating toxic chemicals from our lawns will definitely benefit all adults, children and even our pets.
