Christina Curtis, Ph.D.
Research performed at: USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center
Specialty/Research Area: Breast Cancer
Award Year: 2012
Career Summary:  Dr. Curtis is Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. She received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Computational Biology in 2007 from USC. She holds two MSc degrees, one in Molecular and Cell Biology from USC (2005) and the other in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics from the University of Heidelberg (Germany, 2003). In addition to her award from STOP CANCER, she is the recipient of an award from the The Housewares Charity Foundation BCRF Project (2011 – 12) with co-investigator Prof. Bruce Ponder of the University of Cambridge (UK).

Year STOP CANCER Award was received:  2012 Marni Levine Memorial RCDA

Description of research performed: Dr. Curtis’s laboratory researches data-driven modeling in combination with computationally driven experimentation to analyze the genetic and molecular processes of cancer. Specifically, her research exploits high-dimensional genomic data and population genetic approaches, and an area of concentration has been the molecular profiling of breast cancer.

Results of research: Dr. Curtis and her team are developing techniques for the systems-level analysis of genotype-phenotype associations, integrating multiple data types derived from sequencing and array-based technologies to understand mechanisms of tumor formation, interrogate intra-tumor heterogeneity and trace stem cell lineages using single-cell genomic assays, and describe mechanisms of cancer progression and therapeutic resistance.

STOP CANCER is committed to funding the most promising and innovative scientists in their early research of all forms of cancer prevention, treatment, cures and subsequent clinical applications. STOP CANCER works primarily with local National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and other qualified institutions in the United States to carry out its mission.
