Jun Wang, Ph.D.
Research performed at: USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center
Specialty/Research Area: Breast Cancer
Award Year: 2018
Career Summary: Dr. Wang is Assistant Professor of Research at Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California (USC). She received her Ph.D. in epidemiology (2012) and M.S. in Applied biostatistics/Epidemiology (2008) from USC. She completed a postdoctoral training (2013-2016) at University of Massachusetts Amherst with a focus on breast cancer etiology and prevention, utilizing biomarkers (blood and tumor tissue markers) in well-established prospective cohort studies. Dr. Wang’s current research builds upon utilizing biomarkers, particularly tumor tissue markers to unravel underlying molecular mechanisms of breast cancer risk and prognostic factors in multi-ethnic populations.

Year STOP CANCER Award was received: 2018 Marni Levine Memorial Seed Grant (Breast)

Description of Research Performed: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is often more aggressive and characterized by a poorer prognosis compared to hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. It disproportionally affects certain racial/ethnic groups, particularly African Americans. Although tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes have been emerging as important factors for TNBC survival, there is currently a lack of studies targeting the multi-ethnic patient population. Dr. Wang focuses on investigating the association between tumor immune microenvironment characteristics, including specific tumor immune infiltrates, and TNBC survival in racially/ethnically diverse patients.

STOP CANCER is committed to funding the most promising and innovative scientists in their early research of all forms of cancer prevention, treatment, cures and subsequent clinical applications. STOP CANCER works primarily with local National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and other qualified institutions in the United States to carry out its mission.
