Melanie R. Palomares, M.D., M.S.

Career Summary: Dr. Palomares is Assistant Professor, Cancer Screening and Prevention, Outcomes Research, and of Medical Oncology at City of Hope (Duarte, CA). She is also a Full Member of that institution's Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program. She received her M.D. from Emory University (Atlanta, GA) in 1993 and her M.S. in epidemiology from University of Washington, Seattle in 2002. She did internship and fellowships at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (Torrance, CA) from 1993–1997. She also held fellowships at University of Washington, Seattle from 1997–2000 in medical oncology, at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center from 2000–2002 in cancer prevention, and again at University of Washington from 2002–2003 in medical genetics. She joined City of Hope as a staff physician in 2003. In addition to her STOP CANCER Award, Dr. Palomares received Southwest Oncology Group's Young Investigator Award in 2005. In 2010, she received a $3.3M grant from National Cancer Institute (NCI) to target breast cancer preventions for Hodgkin's lymphoma survivors.

Description of research performed:  Dr. Palomares heads a lab at City of Hope that conducts breast cancer research, focusing on cancer control and population science, as well as on outcomes research.
 
Results of research:  Dr. Palomares has performed clinical trials with common substances such as grape seed extract and mushroom powder on post-menopausal women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer.
