Yong (Tiger) Zhang, Ph.D.

Career Summary: Dr. Yong (Tiger) Zhang is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemistry of the University of Southern California (USC). He is also a Full Member of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Research Center for Liver Diseases. Dr. Zhang received his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Shandong University in 2003 and his M.S. in Biophysics from University of Guelph in 2006. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry with Professor Vern L. Schramm at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2011. Dr. Zhang received postdoctoral training with Professor Peter G. Schultz at the Scripps Research Institute and California Institute for Biomedical Research (Calibr) from 2011 to 2014. In addition to the STOP Cancer Research Career Development Award, Dr. Zhang has been the recipient of 2012 Julius Marmur Research Award for Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Research, 2015 and 2017 USC Ming Hsieh Institute for Engineering Medicine for Cancer Grants, 2016 The V Scholar Award of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, 2017 New Investigator Grant of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Foundation, and 2017 American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant.

Research Summary: Dr. Zhang is very interested in the development of novel cancer immunotherapeutics. By creatively combining knowledge and technologies from nanotechnology, cell biology, and protein engineering, he is aimed to rationally design and synthesize innovative nanoparticles with power to activate immune system for specific killing of cancer cells with significantly enhanced efficacy and safety. Successful completion of this research work will lead to the development of a broadly applicable and highly versatile platform for next-generation immunotherapeutics.
