Our 2006 & 2007 Fundraising Star!

This is Pat Dobec of Southampton, Ontario lacing 'em up for the 2006 Run, Walk & Roll for Cancer Prevention. Pat raised an amazing $11,829, and has lots of great tips to help other RW&R participants raise more $$ than they ever thought possible!
How does she do it?
For starters, Pat is very sociable and a great networker. She's a member of several different organizations – bridge club, badminton club, hiking club, to name just a few – and she makes requests for RW&R donations to all of them. She sends her requests primarily by e-mail, and she both thanks each donor and provides weekly updates to her email contacts – even the ones who have not donated – to keep them up-to-date on her progress. Her letters are chatty and enjoyable to read – you'll probably see some examples as we get our 2007 fundraising on the go!. Pat makes a point of taking her RW&R fundraising 'hat' with her wherever she goes!

CANCER PREVENTION CONFERENCE
In addition to being official sponsor of the
2007 Run, Walk & Roll for Cancer Prevention, the Saunders-Matthey Cancer Prevention Coalition
is co-sponsor with Prevent Cancer Now
of the May 24-27 conference in Ottawa -
Cancer: It's About Prevention. It's About Time!
We've made it easier than ever to raise funds for PREVENTION. Please join us, and help stop the cancer epidemic in Canada.
As you probably know, cancer now strikes nearly half of all Canadian men, and over one third of all women at some point in their lives.
We welcome you to our 2007 fundraiser for cancer prevention. The Run, Walk & Roll is the one and only event in Canada that focuses solely on PREVENTION, which is the best single opportunity to stop the cancer epidemic in Canada.
You can participate in the Run, Walk & Roll for Cancer Prevention as an Individual, or as part of a Team. There are 3 ways to get involved:
1) You can organize your own local run, walk, bike ride, or canoe race, etc.
2) You (and/or your Team) can 'piggyback' on one of many well-established running & walking events already 'on the go' in Canada – or anywhere in the world for that matter. For example, we have many RW&R folks who participate in the exciting Ottawa Race Weekend (aka Run Ottawa), the Toronto Marathon, which occurs in the Fall. (See box below for our Ottawa and London Ontario contacts)
3) Or, you can create your own event to raise funds for cancer prevention, It can be any sort of fundraiser you choose - a potluck & poker party, a movie night, a bake sale or a golf tourney!

Or call us for more information and ideas:

Participating in the Run, Walk & Roll is free, although if you're 'piggybacking' on an established event, you're responsible for paying the entry fee that event charges, such as the Ottawa Race Weekend/Run Ottawa.

DEDICATION

Ray Matthey
This year's Run, Walk & Roll is dedicated to Ray Matthey
and his family.
Ray, who was born in Switzerland and lived in Ottawa much of his adult life, died from prostate cancer in late 2003. He established the Saunders-Matthey Foundation for Breast Cancer Research in 1996, two years after the untimely death of his cherished wife, Sue, from breast cancer, in 1994. A year earlier, Ray had suffered the loss of his beloved daughter Jeannette, a well-known CBC radio correspondent, who passed away from breast cancer in 1993.
Saunders-Matthey became an organization solely devoted to primary prevention - to stopping cancer before it starts - when it merged with the Breast Cancer Prevention Coalition in late 2003.

Pickering Pesticide By-Law Progress!
By RW&R's Dave Renaud
On February 19th, I spoke proudly on behalf of the CAW Durham Regional Environment Council as the fifth and last delegation regarding Pickering Council’s motion asking staff to draft a bylaw restricting pesticide use.
I told council about the serious health threats associated with the use of pesticides including cancer, birth defects, reproductive problems and neurological diseases. Children and pets are among those most at risk and I related my story of our family’s little Maltese dog, Pujo, who got "really, really sick" about 15 years ago.
Pickering Council approved the motion unanimously! To date, 127 municipalities across Canada have passed bylaws restricting pesticide use.
One other group spoke to Pickering Council, and we would like to thank this great organization for working on behalf of all of us - the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, (CAPE). These docs have concluded there is a serious problem with the amount of pesticides the population at large is exposed to, particularly children. The CAW Durham Region Environment Council supported CAPE with funds raised through the Run, Walk & Roll for Cancer Prevention. Good work!
Many thanks to Irene Gubelmann, Oakville Ontario, who created this brochure in honour of Donna Penrice, who passed away from leukemia on January 4, 2007
